Snowy footprints

Amy, Jeni & Sanjive

We traced some of last week's walk through Cark to the allotment spaces - Amy's sister had tended a plot there in the past.

We chatted and admired the artichokes at plot 5. Amy told us of one of the children at her school permaculture project who this week in a group discussion about what to grow had insisted they planted artichokes. We had a giggle imagining how the children might feel about trying to prepare them to eat - and then all agreed that it would be a fabulous learning point. Artichokes it is then!

The frost & snow on the plants is so lovely to see - they lie, quietly resting and waiting. I only took a few photos this time.

We spotted turkey tail growing on the inside of the wooden bed surrounds - I'd mentioned last week that there is research being carried out with turkey tail which has potential benefits for cancer treatments. Sanjive said he'd read an interesting article about it after our walk (maybe we can get the link to share). That conversation led us on to discussions about fungi, mycelium, mycelial threads and the parallels of making connections between humans and nature and how the language of growing is becoming much more comment now.

We shared ideas about other groups and places we knew of: have a look at Mycelium Thinking in Ulverston who are doing some very creative things and are well worth looking up, Amy knows Rema and Dave. Amy also mentioned friends she knows at Cowran Estate, Pennington who are are starting to grow medicinal mushrooms - that's got to be a fabulous visit idea, hasn't it?

We carried on down the lane and over the railway line to get onto the salt marsh. The gate over the river was, as always, locked and the metal bars were really slippy with ice so we wandered alongside the rail embankment until the ground looked a bit too wet underfoot and we turned around.

As ever when in that neck of the woods, we finished off with a cuppa at Brooke's Cafe.

Amy shared her blog about food and foraging: https://www.marmaladeandmud.co.uk/

Next week we are visiting Growing Well, arrive 9:45 for 10am tour - let's car share and please let Jeni know you can make it as we are restricted on numbers.
